<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 12.0pt;">I would like
to add a small introduction for this review. My friend Meredith over at Pandora's Books sent this ARC
basically a year ago, so this review has been on her blog for a while, and I am
just now putting it up on mine. Sorry I haven't had a lot of time to update my
blog, but hopefully that will be changing soon. I did not enjoy this book, so
if you love this book, that's great, but do not attack me for writing my HONEST
opinion on a book I thought needed more work before publishing. Having said all
of that, let's begin.<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 12.0pt;">

<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 12pt;">SUMMARY:

<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Gabriel and Jonah both want to protect her. But
Lailah will have to fight her own battle to find out who she truly is.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 12.0pt;">The
girl knows she’s different. She doesn’t age. She has no family. She has visions
of a past life, but no clear clues as to what she is, or where she comes from.
But there is a face in her dreams – a light that breaks through the darkness.
She knows his name is Gabriel.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 12.0pt;">On
her way home from work, the girl encounters an injured stranger whose name is
Jonah. Soon, she will understand that Jonah belongs to a generation of Vampires
that serve even darker forces. Jonah and the few like him, are fighting with
help from an unlikely ally – a rogue Angel, named Gabriel.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 12.0pt;">In the crossfire between good and evil, love and
hate, and life and death, the girl learns her name: Lailah. But when the lines
between black and white begin to blur, where in the spectrum will she find her
place? And with whom?

<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 12.0pt;">REVIEW:<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 12.0pt;">

<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Alright,
so where should I start with this one? It definitely felt like been there, done
that. I really really wanted to like Lailah, I did. Sadly, I couldn’t.
Everything just felt like another rift off of Fallen and Twilight. I love books
about vampires and angels, so that wasn’t my real problem with the book. The
paper characters and love triangle are probably what killed this whole book for
me.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 12.0pt;"> Let’s
start with Lailah, shall we? I wanted to like her because how cool is it to
remember parts of your past lives! She just seemed to me to be too flaky and
materialistic for me. She was more worried about going shopping than she was
trying to figure stuff out. When a conflict would arise, she would run before
trying to sort out a better solution. Very disappointed in that aspect of our
heroine. She just was not super relatable to me, and I need a stronger female
character than what Lailah provided for me. I’ll fight for Aelin over Lailah
anyday!

<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 12.0pt;"> Ugh,
so with any YA book about vampires and angels what else are we missing? A love
triangle! Oh joy, more reasons for Lailah to not have her act together. So
introduce Jonah, a bad boy vampire, and Gabriel, the ever overly attractive
love of all my past lives main angel. Between these three and everyone else
trying to get in on this love mess, it really starts to detract from what’s
left of the plot. I would just like to put out a PSA that stalkers are not
someone you want in your life, run away from them as soon as possible. Don’t
let them in your bedrooms! YA tends to overly romanticize bad boys a bit too
much, and I felt that Jonah crosses the line to way too creepy. Gabriel is just
a jerk.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 12.0pt;"> There
was way too much insta-love for me. I prefer to see the relationship blossom
and grow into something magical, like Hazel and Gus. I am a huge fan of angels
and demons/vampires, and was a bit disappointed in the whole side dimension,
not real heaven and hell type thing. Don’t use Angels if you’re afraid of also
writing about the existence or absence of God.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 12.0pt;"> I
don’t seem myself reading the rest of the series, unless someone thinks that
I’m missing out and it’s gotten way better! I do believe in book second
chances. But for right now, I’m not super pleased. It sounds like the author
had some good ideas, but the execution was not there. Definitely a better story
if it’s just for Wattpad.

would like to thank Meredith for sending me this ARC. I didn’t like it as well
as I wanted to, but I’m at least owning up to that. I had such high hopes for
this book. Just because I didn’t like it, doesn’t mean that someone else won’t.
If you loved Lailah, I’m not dissing you or saying that you have bad taste in
books, just that we have different preferences! If you loved it, then that’s
great for you. Keep reading! I think I’ve ranted enough for now. :)

At first glance,
The Call may not look like much; it is a relatively thin book with
minimal designs on the cover, but one you’ve read the first chapter, you’ll be
able to tell that this book is something special. Set in a desolate Ireland,
teenagers are “called” to another world. They are transported into the
beautiful and terrifying world of the Sidhe, where they must try to survive
being hunted. In preparation for their calling, the teens attend a training
school, where they condition their bodies and learn to evade the Sidhe that
will hunt them. The story follows fifteen-year-old Nessa as she prepares for
the day that she will be called to the world of the Sidhe.

When
I first began this book, I was excited to immerse myself into an entirely new
world with an entirely new monster. The prologue and first chapter seemed very
promising, and if I didn’t have any other responsibilities for that day, I
would have devoured the book in one sitting. When I picked it back up later
that evening, the next few chapters progressed very slowly. While the story was
advancing, a lot of the details about the major points of the novel had yet to
be revealed. Normally, I am perfectly fine with trying to figure out where the
story will go, and I find puzzling over the characters and their possible
motives to be fun. However, for this novel, I was completely lost. I felt like
I was reading the second book in a series without having read the first. Maybe
if I knew more about Irish mythology and the Sidhe, I wouldn’t have felt this
way, but I don’t and so I was confused throughout most of it.

Once
I stopped trying to go deeper into the background details and just trusted that
O’Guilin knew what he was doing, I was able to enjoy the story more. The
characters are well written, and I enjoyed concentrating on them and getting to
know them. As I continued reading, more of the background was revealed, and the
story became much more interesting and intense.

Cassidy
presented this book to me to read and review because I thoroughly enjoy the
horror genre. She told that many people thought this book was scary or
unsettling, and that I should read it first and let her know if she could
handle it or not. This book did not scare me at all, but it was a very
thrilling read. I was never afraid of the Sidhe, but I was fascinated by them.
When I put the book away at 3am, I would continue thinking about the characters
and the Sidhe and I would try to figure out what was going to happen next. I
couldn’t sleep because I was enthralled, not because I was afraid of being
called by the Sidhe. My experience with this book is very typical for me, I am
hardly ever frightened by things that are intended to scare, and so if you
scare easily, proceed with caution.

Overall, it was a good read, but
not my absolute favorite; I will definitely read a sequel (if there is one).
The book loses some points for not revealing enough details early on; I like
having enough information to work with and attempt to figure things out before
the story is almost over. I am also taking some points away for the romance
aspect O’Guilin put in the novel. I wish that he had left out the romance parts
of the story and focused more on the Sidhe and survival parts; I don’t really
care for romance, especially if there’s more interesting things happening, and
the romance in this novel felt somewhat forced and unnatural. It’s not
completely awful, especially if you keep in mind that the story is about a
bunch of fifteen-year-olds, but it is still weird. While the book loses some
points for these things, it gains some for being a completely unique idea;
maybe I live in a very tiny world, but I have never heard of the Sidhe or
encountered a book that puts such a new and dark twist on mythological
creatures.

While
it may seem like I have a lot of complaints, I did really enjoy the book.
Although I felt the story was slow in some parts, I did not want to put it down
because I wanted to find out what would happen next. It was a quick read for
me, and I enjoyed almost every minute of it. So, if you have a little time to
spend with a unique and fascinating book, go ahead and give The Call a
try.

Going into this book, I had super high expectations because I absolutely love the Lunar Chronicles. I should probably review those soon, but anyways I thoroughly enjoy the character development and world building from a "typical" Marissa Meyer novel. That being said, I also want everyone to know before continuing with my review, that I'm not a giant fan of Alice in Wonderland-esque books. I was really hoping that Heartless would change that for me because the Queen of Hearts is my favorite character in that particular world.

I was expecting a lot out of this book, and part of me is still unsatisfied with it. I enjoy her writing, but Heartless seemed kind of slow to me compared with the Lunar Chronicles to me. I got about 300 pages in and still felt like not a lot had happened or really changed since the beginning of the story. Sure, there was a small progression in the side love story, but I feel like there needed to be more action to hold you over for the kissing that doesn't really begin until after halfway thru the book. After that, I did start to skim, which I feel bad about, but I'd rather skim than not finish it.

All of that being said, I did like it. I'm in no way saying that it's a bad book. It's just a bit slow for me, and after Illuminae I need more fast paced reads. Also, I absolutely love Jest. He's by far the best thing in this book. Her writing of his character is amazing. His riddles in the book are very thought provoking and we finally get an answer to why is a raven like a writing desk! I feel like I would really enjoy this book more if I was more into books on Alice in Wonderland. Don't hate me, I liked it, but I didn't love it like I wanted to.
NON-SPOILERY REVIEW:

I know I've had Glass Sword forever (well, just last November), but I am finally getting around to reviewing it on here. I had super high expectations for the sequel because of how much I loved Red Queen. For the most part I think those expectations were met. It still had all of the action that I loved from the first book. I really enjoyed being able to explore more into the secrets behind the Newbloods. Though I still have plenty of questions about them! Also, I know I shouldn't love him, but I absolutely love King Maven. He's the perfect baddie with that frightened child underneath.

Finally being able to see how extent of the Scarlet Guard gives me hope in Mare's rebellion. We get to see lots more of Farley and learn some more about her, and a brand new character in the Scarlet Guard. She's become one of my favorite side characters. My heart still goes out to Cal. Poor thing, watching him cope with all of the events from the end of Red Queen breaks my heart. He's like a lost puppy trying to figure out why his owner won't come get him. Mare's evolution has been astounding. By the end of Glass Sword, she is barely the Mare that she started out being. I'm really excited to see how she grows and changes and stays true to herself.

The plot was just as fast paced and full of plot twists as the first. I did something bad, and read the last page, so I knew how it ended, but even in the last ten pages I had NO IDEA how we were going to end up there. I never saw it coming. You think everything is going to be sunshine and rainbows and then BLAM plot twist back into the fire again! (get it?

Also, a moment of silence, for that one part where Victoria rips out your heart and leaves you damaged for the rest of the book. My list for ARC August will consist of both new ARCs and ARCs that I've had for some time now. I'm going to start with all of my newer ARCs and then just fill what's left of the month with my older ARCs. So Let's jump into my list!

New ARCs
1) Three Dark Crowns
2) Gilt Hollow
3) Unnatural Deeds
4) Labyrinth Lost
5) Iron Cast

Older ARCs
1) Julia Vanishes
2) Illuminae
3) Glass Sword
4) A Madness So Discrete
5) Heir to the Sky

I have quite a few more older ARCs that I could in theory add to this list, but 10 ARCs in August is going to be rather ambitious for me. If I have any more time, then I will surely let this list grow! Right now, my priorities are on the ARCs with the earliest release dates. Let me know if there are any ARCs that you're super excited for or think I should read first! I know I didn't list authors or goodreads links, but the reviews will have all the information you need!

*There is probably going to be some changes in what I actually read for ARC August since I've been doing a lot of trades recently! I'm so excited for new arcs!
Thanks for dealing with my extended absence recently. I had a state test that had to be passed (yay I got my CNA!) but I've also been dealing with some pretty bad health issues. I am so sorry for being gone, but I had to take care of me that way I can keep blogging at all!

For this post, it's going to be a bit different from a regular review. I haven't had a chance to thoroughly review Shades of Doon or Forever Doon individually, but I will! (Stay tuned!) but I'm honor of the amazing release day of Forever Doon the final book in the Doon series, I am going to give an overall series review! It won't have any spoilers, except maybe a few from the first book! And away we go!

My love letter to Doon:

Before I'd started the Doon series, I had just finishing watching Outlander and couldn't help wanting more Scottish YA. After awhile of strolling the interwebs I found Sasha's post about Doon. That being said, I had super high expectations of Doon going into it! I basically thought it was going to be the same story lines from Outlander, but I was wrong and not in a bad way. I liked how different the two stories are. Both have amazing swoony romance and hot Scottish men, but Outlander is not Doon. I felt like I wanted to actually be in Doon, whereas I'd prefer not to travel to the outlander world. Doon feels so homey to me and that's what has kept me coming back since book one. Being able to see the changes in the culture and people of Doon throughout the series has been wonderful. It's felt like I've changed and grown too.

The characters from Doon are absolutely some of my favorites. Veronica and MacKenna are very different when it comes to their thinking and approaching a situation, but flatter each other greatly. I never felt forced to read either of their POVs, which is often a problem for me. I also really loved the new POVs in Forever Doon! I won't tell you who if you don't already know, but it's been a long time coming for their side of the story. The hardships that MacKenna and Duncan go through as a couple is so believable and hurt me to read. I was mended by the end of Destined for Doon.

The plot never felt forced or like it dragged behind. The series is overall a very quick and fun read. It's full of romance, Scottish princes, adventure, brave female leads, and of course my favorite pop culture references! I might have to do a separate post with some of my favorite ones. I am very happy I picked this series up and am sad that it's finally coming to a close.

I was worried that Forever Doon would not give me the satisfaction or closure I needed to be able to happily finish the series. I was surprised when it did just that. Lorie and Carey have given a wonderful ending to a story and world that I want to keep visiting. Doon will always have a special place in my heart.

On that note, I am very happy for its release into the wild today! Everyone should go pick it up and cross the bridge one more time. I'm glad I did.

Comment all of your thoughts on the Doon series. Did you love it as much as me? Dreading the final chapter? Subscribe and make sure you don't miss it when I review Shades of Doon and Forever Doon separately!

Also I'm sorry for the lack of pictures and links! I'm currently writing this from the doctor's office. :)

I am so excited to be sharing the cover of Hear The Wolves by Victoria Scott! I absolutely love being apart of the VMafia and getting to share this exciting news with all of you. I've been holding onto this cover for at least 24 hours and the excitement is killing me. So first, a little about the book.
SUMMARY:

But ever since her mom left the family and she lost hearing in one ear in a blizzard, it's been hard to talk to people, and near-impossible to go anywhere or do anything without her dad or big sister within eyesight -- it makes her too scared to be on her own.

When they leave her home alone for what should only be two nights, she's already panicked. Then the snow starts falling and doesn't stop. One of her neighbors is hurt in an accident. And the few people still left in Rusic need to make it to the river and the boat that's tied there -- their only way to get to a doctor from their isolated Alaska town.

But the woods are icy cold, and the wolves are hungry. Sloan and her group are running out of food, out of energy, and out of time. That's when the wolves start hunting them . . .

I bought this book at the very beginning of the summer, and has been on my original TBR for months now. I am so glad I actually got into it. I know it's a BIG book, 600 pages is very intimidating, but it took me two sittings to finish it! I never would have thought that I'd be able to read 400 pages in a day. I absolutely loved the format of this book. It's not 600 pages of just straight reading, it's an adventure. Being able to read all of the emails, IMs, files, and reports, and more is so mysterious. It definitely helped to move the story line along by making you feel like a sort of detective trying to figure out exactly what's happening on board the ships.

I know a lot of people automatically go "eew, sci-fi", but it's so much more than that. There's a love story going on, a bit of horror, and so many plot twists. It's not only about the sci-fi aspects. Speaking of plot twists, at first it's about a planet being blown up (not a spoiler, you can read that on the first page), then changes again and again and again. I literally describe it based on the different plot twists, but will refrain from doing that now. I think the best way to go into this book is without any real idea of where the story should go! It's more of mystery and adventure that way.

I got about halfway in and could not imagine how much more intense the book could get. Well, It did! It's a fast paced, roller coaster of a plot line. It will suck you in and never let you go. If you think you know what's going to happen next, YOU'RE WRONG. I thought I had everything figured out by the last 100 pages, then the plot changed on me again. I thought everything was going to be okay and wrapping up at about 10 pages from the end, then there was another plot twist that I should've seen coming, but didn't. It's hinted at in the book, but I honestly don't think anyone would catch unless doing a reread.

Did I mention the characters are amazing? Kady and Ezra will steal your hearts from the very beginning. I'm kind of sad that the next book, Gemina, will not feature them as the leads, but am excited to meet new characters. Kady is the perfect sass queen and following her journey was so incredible.

This is probably my favorite book ever. It was a whirlwind adventure and I cannot wait for Gemina. (Literally! If you have an arc you want to trade email me! Or just one I could borrow and send back.) I don't know how much more I can rant about this amazing book. It broke my heart and then mended me again by the ending. Go get it if you haven't!

<span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif;">The second book in the popular new Doon YA series that takes on a classic story, Brigadoon, and spins it in a new way to give readers a fresh, modern experience.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif;">In this sequel to Doon, Kenna Reid realizes she made a horrible mistake-choosing to follow her dreams of Broadway instead of staying in the enchanted land of Doon. Worse, she's received proof she and Duncan are meant to be, along with torturous visions of the prince she left behind. So when Duncan shows up and informs Kenna that Doon needs her, she doesn't need to think twice. But even if Kenna can save the enchanted kingdom, her happily ever after may still be in peril.
NON-SPOILERY REVIEW:

<span style="color: #4e2800; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif;">I really enjoyed being able to go back into Doon. After the events of the first book, I knew there was still some things to tie up with the witch (HA! cause she tied up Jamie) and also with MacKenna leaving Doon. Just letting you guys know, I was so disappointed in Kenna for deciding to leave Duncan on the bridge. I understand that she has dreams that she can't accomplish in Doon with the theatre, but no ma'am. We do not leave the people we are Called to. I was very frustrated with her starting this book.

<span style="color: #4e2800; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #4e2800; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif;">That being said, I wasn't expecting Jamie and Veronica's relationship to grow the way it does in this sequel. It was nice to see what's happening with them in addition to more of Kenna and Duncan. There was a good bit of the relationships in the story, but still focuses on the main problem in Doon, the Witch. I also really enjoyed how there was more of a backstory and presence of the Witch in this book. I wanted to know more about her and her family's history in the first book, and finally got that in this one. Guys, that witch's cottage is creepy! But I love all the detail they put into it.

<span style="color: #4e2800; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #4e2800; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif;">I feel very attached to the characters now, and felt like they should have ended the series at this book. It would have provided for a very safe, happy ending. However, it's not. There's still two more books that will probably break my heart. I'm not quite sure what is in store for our characters in Shades of Doon but I am so excited to find out. I'm still uncertain about one of the characters introduced in Destined for Doon, if you've read it, then you know EXACTLY who I'm talking about. My theory is that she's helping the witch. Maybe it's just because I prefer MacKenna with Duncan and I don't need a minor character breaking up my ship.

<span style="color: #4e2800; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif;">I was happy with this sequel. I think it stood up to the first book, which is normally hard to do in a series. I can't wait to go back in for another round of Scottish princes, Doonians, kilts, and evil witches. Also, I'm still very much okay with all of the pop culture references they make. I often find myself laughing out loud when I read them. It almost always makes me think of Castiel from Supernatural when he says that he doesn't get that reference. Another great work by Carey and Lorie.

I just wanted to start out by saying I am so so sorry that I haven't been around for two weeks, but let me tell you why. Okay, so you have to first understand that I live in the middle of nowhere, which means that we get power outrages and things like that quite frequently. My wifi has been disconnected thanks to my neighbors for two weeks now! You guys don't know how lost I've been without wifi. No wifi = no blog posts. I'm sorry for this everyone. I hope you forgive me. Now, on to more fun things.

I've been trying to figure out my TBR for before I go back to college in August and just can't seem to nail done anything in particular since there's so many I want to read. Therefore I'm going to do something exciting, or well exciting to me because I'm overly excited about everything related to books. So anyways to the idea, for the first two weeks of August I am turning over my TBR to...*drum roll please* YOU! Towards the end of this month, I'll shamefully tell you what I haven't read yet and have you vote to see what books I read before I go back. The goal is to read 3-4 books during that time, depending on size.

For now though, I'm going to try and tackle a couple of Must-Reads this month! *These are listed in no particular order, and shows no real preference. I love them all equally*

Well, all equally except for this one.
1) Cruel Crown by Victoria Aveyard I haven't gotten around to the short stories yet, and it is killing me to go back to Norta. Please don't hate me, but I kind of love Maven. He's the YA equivalent of Goffrey and I love when the villains are written so perfectly hate-able, which makes me love how that character is written so thoughtfully. Though I'm not saying that I support his actions in the books and would probably enjoy having Mare send her lightning into him. Also, I just really love how Victoria writes. I never feel like I'm forcing myself thru her books and I absolutely love that. I would honestly read anything she wrote--grocery list, King's Cage edits, a restraining order--literally anything.

2&3) Shades of Doon by Carey Corp and Lorie Langdon I am slowly, but surely working my way thru this series! I truly enjoy being transported back to Doon in each new book. I was originally planning on binging the series because my friend Elizabeth over at her blog, Literary Froggy so graciously sent me an ARC of Forever Doon. I just finished Destined for Doon a few days ago, so be on the look-out for a review THIS WEEKEND. Which brings me to book (3) on this list, Forever Doon. I want this series finished. I HAVE to know what happens with my two favorite Scottish princes and the kingdom.

Speaking of, if you preorder Forever Doon before it's release date on August 2, 2016, you can get SWAG! It's a swag pack of printable posters, coloring pages, AND the first two chapters of Forever Doon! All you have to do is preorder, snap a picture of your receipt, and email it to Doon@Harpercollins.com I'm actually about to go do that now and you should too!

(Yes, I'm blogging extra this week to make up for not having wifi recently. Did I mention my power was out for 7 and a half HOURS yesterday?)

4) The Crown's Game by Evelyn Skye I've heard so many great things about this book and actually preordered it and became a member of the Tsar's Guard, but sadly haven't read it yet. I was signed up to do the read along with Brittany (Brittany's Book Rambles), but my copy came in late and did not have time to catch up over 20 chapters in a day. (I may have also experienced a reading slump).

These are the books that I absolutely want to get done by the end of the month. If I read more then, go me! I'm also going to start a new segment on my blog next week called, The First Time I Met...
It's going to be all of the embarrassing and occasionally amazing stories about the first time I met a particular author of that week. Stick around and subscribe to my blog, so that you never miss a post! Also, if there's something you think I need to read this month, then just leave a comment below. I love hearing from you all!

P.S. I've been working on here a lot today since I finally have wifi, so if you're on here way late at night or early in the morning and things start moving or going wonky. HI! that's me you're interacting with. Just making changes to the blog.Cashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04263799466811539392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2540382828453881963.post-51207040678395815032016-06-21T19:52:00.000-04:002016-06-21T19:52:40.032-04:00Empire of Dust ARC ReviewTitle: Legacy of Kings
By: Eleanor Herman
Release Date: June 28, 2016
Pages: 432
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Format: eARC

Normally, I am very hesitant to start a sequel, even though I absolutely love series (hello Throne of Glass and Talon), just because I worry that the sequel will not live up to the hype or standards set in the first novel. Empire of Dust did not let me down at all. It was well written and still had all the amazing historical research that Eleanor is known for. I feel like the story was just as interesting as the beginning was in Legacy of Kings. The story has just as many cliffhangers and plot twists and a few moments where I was just mind blown by what happened, which you can find out when it is released next week!

The first book had a lot of POVs, but I enjoyed most of them so it didn't bother me as much as it did in the sequel. I think there are way too many POVs. I did feel like some of them weren't that great and had to push forward with them in order to get back to the plot lines that I really enjoyed. I was really glad to see more of Cyn and Zofia just because I really like where their stories are going and how interesting they are as characters. There are also a ton of side plots that I didn't feel helped move the story along. Just keep reading for the amazing story goodness!

So I personally don't know much about this time period, but really love all of the true historical facts interwoven into the story. That being said, someone with more knowledge of the era could figure out some stuff that will happen/should happen, but everything for me is such a surprise and I absolutely love that. Also, the romance in this book is making my fangirl so very happy. Heph and Kat! I will go down with this ship. Seeing all of their tension and the slow building of their relationship after he saved her life at the end of Legacy of Kings has been so frustrating because I am ready for them to be a thing. I did not really see her being with Jacob even in the beginning of the first book when he like half proposed to her and honestly how are you supposed to explain that you stabbed your fiancé in battle? Bad move Jacob.

This sequel does live up to the hype of the series. I know there will be a third book, but if it's a trilogy or not is unknown to me. The ending was more subtle than the first book, but gives a good direction of where the story is going. Even though there are new questions that were not answered in this book, I am very excited to see what is going to happen next. I will be keeping up with this series, so stayed tuned for more as this series continues! Definitely pick this sequel up when it comes out if you want the blood, murder, romance, and betrayal to continue for these great characters!

Okay, honesty time. My roommate got me this book for my birthday, last September, because I thought the cover was pretty. It's been sitting on my shelf ever since. Well lucky for me, Harlequin Teen gifted me with an eARC of Empire of Dust recently. What better excuse to finally push this to the top of my TBR? The book for me, started off a bit slow. There were so many places and different POVs to establish in the beginning. After getting accustomed to all the characters, the book went by pretty quickly. I liked the third person narrative, but personally feel like there are too many POVs. I think there are about six, including two minor characters, that the reader gets a chance to follow. While this does offer a great wealth of knowledge on the situations happening at the same time, there were some POVs that I liked more than others. I really enjoyed Kat's and Cyn's chapters, even though there were more of Cyn's in the beginning than later on. I am strongly hoping to see more of her and her side plot in the sequel. Also, we only see Zo for many three chapters, I feel like her ending chapter leaves much to be desired and was not a very well chosen place for her to be at the end of the book. I will riot if there is not more on her in the sequel. I feel like Zo could be a real star, but her story is extremely sad and distressing. It took a lot out of me to read what she has to endure.

That being said, I went into Legacy of Kings having read the prequel, Voice of Gods. Let me just say that I HIGHLY recommend reading it before starting the series. It clears up a lot of possible confusion throughout the novel. Also, having read it, I knew some things that I thought were important to look after and I still did not see that ending coming. It went completely over my head. That twist was much needed in order to help the book and possibly the rest of the series continue with the same drama that propelled Legacy of Kings. I really enjoyed all of the research and history that is interwoven into the story.

I really enjoyed Legacy of Kings more than I thought I was going to. The prequel novella left much to be desired, and the writing did improve in this series debut. I felt transported back into a world full of war, mystical creatures, and treachery. Oh and did I mention Magic? There's so much more magic in this book than I was expecting and loved that aspect of it. Blood, Romance, Betrayal, Magic, what's not to love?

3. As much as I love the Doon series, so far I haven't been able to really get into Destined for Doon. I plan on finishing at least this one, if not the whole series, by the end of June.

I'm taking a few classes that last until the end of June, which is why I've been so slow getting through everything. SUMMARY:

Veronica doesn't think she's going crazy. But why can't anyone else see the mysterious blond boy who keeps popping up wherever she goes? When her best friend, Mackenna, invites her to spend the summer in Scotland, Veronica jumps at the opportunity to leave her complicated life behind for a few months.

But the Scottish countryside holds other plans.

Not only has the imaginary kilted boy followed her to Alloway, she and Mackenna uncover a strange set of rings and a very unnerving letter from Mackenna's great aunt—and when the girls test the instructions Aunt Gracie left behind, they find themselves transported to a land that defies explanation. Doon seems like a real-life fairy tale, complete with one prince who has eyes for Mackenna and another who looks suspiciously like the boy from Veronica's daydreams. But Doon has a dark underbelly as well. The two girls could have everything they've longed for...or they could end up breaking an enchantment and find themselves trapped in a world that has become a nightmare.
NON-SPOILERY REVIEW:

Entering Doon was a whirlwind adventure. Once I got into the book, I could not put it down. I was able to find this book in only two sittings. It took a couple chapters for me to become hooked, so you just have to troop through the world building, which is done fairly quickly. After becoming a Doonian though, the pages flew by. There is adventure, unbreakable friendship, and totally swoon worthy guys with accents! I could feel myself wishing to live in their universe throughout the book. The world consumed me and left me with the sound of bagpipes. This is definitely a good recommendation for fans of Outlander, but it is very different from Outlander. Even though both have super hot Jamies. Also, the writers in this book have instantly captured me as a lifelong fan with their hilarious pop culture references. One of my favorites included, "He looked like a goth kid with a Jedi complex" (page 117). I know, probably not very funny outside of context, but oh boy did they really appeal to my inner geek.

I found the characters to be extremely relatable and they quickly had me hooked. I felt the struggles that Veronica, our main female lead, faced in the beginning of the novel were realistic, but not to the extent that they were portrayed. I mean I'm sure that has happened to someone, but it just felt very overdone to make it seem tragic. Our counterpart to Veronica, and Veronica's best friend, MacKenna was also gifted with her own POV. She intrigued me especially as she grew throughout the book. Jamie and Duncan are the swoon worthy princes of Doon, and you will want to meet them ASAP! The growth of all of the characters by the end did not feel forced and was very reasonable for the circumstances faced.

OVERALL:

I absolutely loved this book. Jamie is my new Scottish prince book boyfriend. You will want to pick up this series before the final book in the series comes out. The twists and turns in the plot were, at least to me, unpredictable. I thought I knew what was happening, then it turned out to be something different all together and a completely different villain, but I'm also really bad at conspiracy theories. This was a beautiful first book of summer and be prepared to storm the bridge!
I cannot wait to see more of them in the rest of the series and will be starting book two, Destined for Doon immediately. The series will be a quartet and will finish up in August of 2016. Stay tuned as I return to Doon and post more discussions, a spoilery review, and reviews for the rest of the series. Also, be on the lookout for more upcoming reviews this summer!Cashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04263799466811539392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2540382828453881963.post-31987623465261695882016-05-09T19:47:00.000-04:002016-05-09T19:47:11.800-04:00Catching Up + Summer TBRHey Guys!

Sorry for the extended lack of activity! I've been so incredibly busy finishing up this year at college and finals. I am finally off for the summer, which means more blog posts (yay!). If some of you are keeping up with things on my IG (@heir_of_books) you'll know that I was surprised with a trip to the launch of Renee Ahdieh's The Rose and The Dagger. It was so much fun to be able to go with my bestie/roomie and boyfriend for the day. Also, I've had some HUGE book hauls (more pictures to come). Thanks for being patient and waiting out these past two months with me. Here's to a great summer for reading!

Now for something fun. My Summer TBR. These are the books I plan on getting done sometime before I head back in August. They are listed in NO particular order, just as I happen to see them on my bookshelf. Also, please forgive me because I have A LOT of catching up to do, hence the killer-bank breaking, book hauls. LET'S DO THIS!
1) Queen of Shadows by Sarah J Maas
2) The Assassin's Blade by Sarah J Maas
3) A Court of Thorns and Roses bySarah J Maas
4) A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J Maas
OKAY, I KNOW. I'm very behind on the queen's work. That's why I'm catching up before Empire of Storms.
5) The Shadow Queen by CJ Redwine
6) Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. It just looks so GOOD!
7) Doon Series by Carey Corp and Lorie Langdon. I was recently gifted with a digital ARC of Forever Doon, so I definitely plan on marathoning these bad boys.
8) Sword and Verse by Kathy MacMillan.
9) These Broken Stars Trilogy by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

So I know most of these aren't incredibly new, but I do need to catch up. I'm going to attempt to keep updates on my goodreads account as I read new books! Are any of these your personal favorites? Have a recommendation for a book not listed? Leave me a comment! I always enjoy hearing what you have to say. Stay tuned for a new post or review for next week!
It's going to be a collection of everything that I've done (or possibly something I've gotten) until now. So let's see if these things are worth sharing or not. I'm going to try to provide some proof for most of these at the bottom.

I met Sarah J. Maas TWICE. I met her first at Yallfest two years ago now, then she toured near me for the release of ACOTAR. Not only did I meet her, but I got to sign her super cool first edition of Throne of Glass (the one with the picture of the blonde girl on it before we got the newer covers), then she proceeded to call me a rule breaker. (She can tell these things instantly you guys).

I also got to meet the absolute sweetheart that is Stephanie Perkins. It was right after Isla and the Happily Ever After came out at the Decatur Book Festival. Not only did I get my entire collection signed, but I did a thing. *drum roll please* I made a shirt based off of her books and she loved it! Even her companion and husband took pictures of us together. It was definitely a very proud moment for me. (See picture below for proof)

I launched my bookstagram account! I take pictures of books (it sounds super lame when you have to explain it). I have six bookshelves in my room and honestly could not see why I couldn't share the treasures they hold with the rest of the bookish community. Find me at @heir_of_books on instagram for updates on what I'm reading and my latest book hauls.

I read my first Sarah Dessen book. I know, I know shame on me for waiting so so long to read one. I started off with Saint Anything and holy crap I loved it so much. I now know why she is super popular and doesn't live too far from my university actually. (she told me not to go to the school where she went to graduate school and look up her thesis paper. apparently it embarrasses her.) So you know what I did after that? I went and bought all of her books. I'm still making my way through them, but loving every single one of them.

I joined the Scarlet Guard. Rise, red as the dawn. Which can only mean one thing. I met Victoria Aveyard this year. Also, I got to make some amazing friends in the Scarlet Guard. And yes you guess right. I got some awesome Scarlet Guard swag and got to read Glass Sword in November and boy if you haven't read it yet, you NEED to. One more thing about when I met her. So at Yallfest, they had these awesome author pins and of course they ran out of Victoria's so you know what she did? Gave me her personal button off of her lanyard. *spasms*

Sabaa Tahir, Renee Ahdieh, and Aisha Saeed. I got to meet them all at the same time. I was lucky enough to be first in line for their panel at DBF. That was a great moment, since it was soon after all three books were released. Not to mention how amazing their books are! An Ember in the Ashes was my absolute favorite read this past summer. Can't wait for Torch to come out!

Lastly, which is not as exciting for most, but I managed to buy some little Dragons. They aren't just any dragons though. These are the masterfully crafted dragons by one of my favorite authors, Julie Kagawa. Every couple of months Julie posts about a dozen of these little gems in her Etsy shop and they sell out in under a minute. I've only ever managed to snag two, but thanks to my boyfriend I now have a whopping total of EIGHT. I can hardly believe it. I've been trying to get a dragon from her since she opened her shop, but was unsuccessful until this year and now I have a small army. I almost have enough for Manon's Thirteen to ride.

That sounds like a pretty nice summary of some of the awesomeness that's happened to me in the past year. Hopefully this year holds even more exciting stuff for me and by extension all of you! Let me know in the comments if you have any awesome bookish memories to share!

So I have some exciting news. I'm participating in this year's Book Blogger Love-a-Thon hosted by Alexa Love Books, The Novel Hermit, Stay Bookish, and The Daily Prophecy. I'm starting a tad bit late today, but only because what college student gets up before noon on a Saturday anyways? No, but seriously my homework is killer. Anyways, to start things off I'm going to be answering a questionnaire for you all to get to know me a little better. Here we go!

1. What's your name?
Cas, duh. If you couldn't tell from it being in almost all of my posts so far. Anyways, it's nice to meet all of you.

2. Where in the world are you blogging from?
Currently, my boyfriend's dorm room. Not so glamorous.

3. How did you get into blogging in the first place?
I've wanted to make a blog for a while now, but I just haven't had enough time. Still kind of don't have enough time, but I just love reading. People ask what I do besides read and it takes me forever to think of other things I enjoy doing..oops. I think being able to connect with other readers and rave and rant and let out all of the feels from the books is a fun thing to do, so I give you this blog.

4. How did you come up with your blog name?
So for those of you who don't know, my blog name is the same as my bookstagram name and my semi-personal twitter page. When I originally thought of the name, I was reading...*pause for dramatic effect* Heir of Fire by Sarah J Maas, and the name just kind of hit me, so I ran with it.

5. What genre do you read and review the most on your blog?
Well so far I haven't posted any reviews (don't worry they're coming), but I see it primarily being a lot of what I already read like fantasy and lots and lots of YA fiction.

6. What other types of posts do you do on your blog, apart from reviews?
Well, I plan on trying to have some author interviews, lots of book news (especially about preorder swag and the signings I'll be going to), but also just talking about books that I'm excited for being they get released.

7. Best blogging experience so far?
I'm going to be completely honest, seeing the page view counter increase has been kinda fun to watch. I text my roommate every time it goes up. But also meeting lots of new blogger friends is super fun.

8. Favorite thing about the blogging community?
EVERYONE IS SO NICE. Literally, the blogging community (and the reader community in general) is super nice and friendly. Yay for introverts.

9. Name five books you're most excited for this 2016?
Just five? Oh boy, now it's time to pick favorites. (in no particular order)

A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J Maas because honestly who doesn't love her? I definitely already have that gorg tote bag preordered. If you want one too, then click here

The Crown's Game by Evelyn Skye. It's going to be her debut book, but I'm super excited go check it out if you haven't yet. Also, there's some lovely preorder stuff you need to check out! The more people who order the more swag we all get, just like playing The Tsar's Game

So this one I know is already out, but I DON'T HAVE IT YET, so no spoilers please. I'm super excited for The Shadow Queen by C.J. Redwine. I've had my copy ordered for a while now, but since I bought it signed and personalized through Parnassus Books at one of her events, I had to have it shipped to my house that I don't go home to until next month. It's waiting for me and I can't wait to get my hands on it. Little known fact is that I consider C.J. to be my first real author friend. She followed me on twitter before Defiance came out and sent me an iBooks copy of it, but I never got to read it then because I broke that phone (it decided to go swimming). Anyways, even though I know she doesn't DM me on twitter or text me (because if I just randomly had her number that would be creepy right?), I still consider her the first author friend I've had. (I just got a physical copy of Defiance and I'm unbelievably happy about it)

Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare. Okay, so Cassandra was the very first author signing I ever went to. It was for the release of Clockwork Prince, so I have that and City of Bones signed, which are my treasures. Her writing and world building is so amazing and I cannot wait to be transported back into the Shadowhunter world.

Lastly, but certainly not least is A Gathering of Shadows by V. E. Schwab. I cannot contain my excitement for having more about Kell and Rhy. I'm working through A Darker Shade of Magic now actually. (the review will be up as soon as I'm done pinky promise). Also as a side note I will be going to one of her signing events whoo! To see if she's coming near you, with other guest authors, check it out here Red London, possibly White London

10. Name five books that you didn't get to read that you want to read in 2016.
Ugh, again with picking just five! It's like trying to pick favorite children. (I do NOT have children by the way. I can't deal with screaming little ones.)

The Elite by Kiera Cass. So shamefully, I've met Kiera twice now and only have The Selection read. I read it in one day and it was wonderful. I liked the story. I did NOT like Celeste. ugh please just eliminate her already, so I want to try to finish this series this year.

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. I've met Leigh like six times now because she's been to like every festivals I've ever gone to. I love love love the Grisha trilogy. The powers and the way the characters are written is amazing. You know what else I love about the Grisha trilogy? THE DARKLING. I know, I know. He's the villian. "Make me your villian." but swoon, I can't help it.

Doon by Carey Corp and Lorie Langdon. I've heard so many good things about this series. I love time travel to start off with. Whibbly whobbly, timey whimey. But also, I love Scotland, like most bookish people do. (cool side fact, my boyfriend is related to a previous king of Scotland, I totally OMG-ed). I hope to start this series really soon.

Speaking of Scotland, I want to read Outlander by Diana Gabaldon this year. I've seen the first half of season one and *swoon* so much goodness in one story I can't even contain myself. (I might rewatch it today now that I think about it). But you can obviously see my issue with reading Outlander right now. That thing is massive, or at least compared to the smaller books I can get through while at school. I'm going to save it probably for this summer and enjoy reading it outside while traveling *figuratively* through the Scottish Highlands.

Queen of Shadows by Sarah J Maas. I've had zero time to read it since it came out. I still need to read the Assassin's Blade first, which is why I've put off reading this soul crusher. I absolutely love Aelin and I guessed about the ship spoiler in Heir of Fire, and I don't know how it will play out, but I do like the idea of them being together.

Wish me luck on trying to get through all of these.

Okay, so that's about it for now, I think that seems like a rather long post. I'll be more active this weekend as I continue with the Love-a-Thon. Feel free to leave comment and tell me about what you want to read or how you feel about anything I haven't read yet!

Cashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04263799466811539392noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2540382828453881963.post-24261346026094363422016-02-17T10:29:00.000-05:002016-07-11T00:34:27.609-04:00Welcome to Checkmate Reads Blog!Hi guys,

I'm Cas and welcome to my blog! I am very excited to be starting this finally. I may be new to blogging, but I am no stranger to books. I am frequently found at book festivals, author signings, attempting to take pictures of books, and reading a good book while eating. I am very privileged to have met so many awesome YA authors including Rick Yancey (who was pictured in my senior baby ad in high school), Sarah J Maas (who called me a rule breaker), Victoria Aveyard (who inducted me into the Scarlet Guard), and Ransom Riggs (who almost got sick on my shoes at a festival, then later photobombed me at an event). I'm going to be using this blog to post all of my bookish thoughts and feels as I continue to read. Feel free to comment and tell me recommendations and your feels too! I love making bookish friends who understand my ships (Rowan and Aelin, what's the ship name? Rowaelin? Aewan? Rowalin? Those all sound awful, so hopefully someone has something better out there.)

When I'm not reading however, I am a full time college student. My major is biology. Studying takes up most of my time, so I am forced to read books slower than I'd like, so this blog will contain more reviews during the summer and my breaks. However, I'm going to try to make it a goal to post once or twice a week, even if it is not a review.

You can find me on Goodreads, Twitter, and Instagram all at @checkmatereads ! Come hang out with me here on my blog. Hope you enjoy your stay and come back soon for the latest news and raves!
